Planning a Build in 2027? Get Your Land Survey Started Now.
Now Is the Time to Get Your Survey Underway
There’s a lot of talk at the moment about a slowing construction market.
Cost-of-living pressures, interest rates and general uncertainty are making homeowners more cautious about committing to major projects. NAB’s latest quarterly business survey reflects some of that hesitation, with Australian business conditions moving into negative territory for the first time since September 2020.
But there’s another side to the story.
The building pipeline hasn’t disappeared.
The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 17,687 dwellings were approved nationally in July 2026, 9% more than the same month last year.
The previous month saw more than 18,300 dwelling approvals, almost 9% higher year-on-year.
For homeowners thinking about building, renovating, extending or subdividing in 2027, that matters.
A quieter market can be the best time to get organised.
We often see people wait until they are ready to build before thinking about their survey.
In reality, surveying is one of the earlier pieces of the development process.
Your architect, designer, engineer or town planner may need accurate information about your land, its levels, existing structures and boundaries before plans can be properly developed.
Depending on your project, that could mean arranging a Detail and Contour Survey, Boundary Survey, Identification Survey or other survey work well before construction begins.
And this is where timing becomes important.
As we head towards the final months of 2026, homeowners who start their planning now have an opportunity to get the preliminary work moving before the traditional end-of-year rush.
Want to build in 2027? Work backwards.
A construction start date isn’t necessarily the date your project begins.
Before builders arrive on site, there may be surveying, design, engineering, planning, DA or CDC documentation, approvals, quoting and scheduling to work through.
That takes time.
Leaving the first steps until January or February can mean joining the queue at the same time as everyone else who decided over the summer holidays that this is the year we’re finally doing the renovation.
Getting your survey completed earlier means your architect or designer has the information they need to keep the next stage moving.
The opportunity right now is preparation.
If you’re still deciding whether to proceed with a project, you don’t necessarily need to commit to the entire build today.
You can get the groundwork done.
Confirm the boundaries. Understand the site. Get the survey completed. Start the design conversation. Find out what’s actually possible.
Then, when you’re ready to move, you’re not starting from zero.
With building approvals remaining above last year’s levels nationally, there’s every reason to expect plenty of projects to continue moving through the pipeline into 2027.
Beat the end-of-year rush.
